At HLIS, we believe in promoting and teaching the social and emotional learning of each student. When we incorporate social and emotional learning, it can be helpful to students and adults by increasing self-awareness, academic achievement, and positive behaviors both in and out of the classroom.
The SEL Star is a student that consistently demonstrates the Big Idea Value Word. We use the Big Idea Value word to teach our students the the importance of good character. During the 1st week of each month, we SAY IT. The goal is for students to be able to simply say the Big Idea value word and the accompanying definition. During the 2nd week, we KNOW IT. The goal is for the students to be able to describe the Big Idea value word and definition in their own words. We want students to move further toward application of the value, as they are able to think critically about what it means in their lives. During the 3rd week, we SEE IT. The goal is for students to look for this Big Idea in the world around them. During the 4th week, we BE IT. The final goal is to give them opportunities to live out the value in their own lives. Each week, the teachers facilitate lessons that include videos and activities to promote and teach the big value word. The school counselors provide support lessons in their classroom guidance lessons. (Current SEL curriculum - Core Essentials) Parents, we post a monthly newsletter about the Big Value word that includes info and activities!
