Through brief counseling, consultation, and coordination the school counselor serves to support and advocate for all students at HLIS. What does a School counselor do?
School counselors design and deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They lead, advocate and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting their school counseling program to the school’s academic mission and school improvement plan. They uphold the ethical and professional standards of ASCA and promote the development of the school counseling program based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage and assess.
School counselors are certified/licensed educators who improve student success for ALL students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.

What services do the HLIS comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) provide?
Our program delivers services to students primarily through:
- Classroom Instruction | Curriculum delivered in classroom setting on various topics
- School-wide Programming | Initiatives that positively impact culture and climate of HLMS
- Small-Group Counseling | 6-8 sessions on selected topic/skill for identified students
- Individual Counseling | Brief session(s) addressing challenges & developing coping skills
- Appraisal & Advisement | Student Self-exploration and Planning for their future
- Responsive services | Addressing immediate needs of students in distress
- Referrals | Resources in local community to support intensive needs of students

How does a student see the school counselor?
Instructional time is extremely important for student success; thus, a referral system is in place to protect it. This system also ensures that counselors have adequate time to address the needs of students. Please select the appropriate online referral.

School counselors are ethically and legally expected to protect student confidentiality unless information is deemed to be of serious or foreseeable harm to the student or someone else. Thus, to ensure student safety and well-being, confidentiality does not apply for the following:
